Culture, Arts & Crafts
Before European settlers arrived on the coast, the culture of the local first nations had been long-established and celebrated. They did this through the art, sculpture, and carvings that expressed their connection with the environment and the spirit that protected both it and them. To this day, this expression of culture and belief remains strong, and visionary First Nations artists, carvers, and sculptors continue to produce work that is second to none. Many of their pieces can be found in the galleries located in both Tofino & Ucluelet.
The sheer beauty of the region also inspires others to create and we are very fortunate to have galleries from outstanding artists Mark Hobson and Roy Henry Vickers within the community of Tofino. Creative expression of various descriptions is a common activity for many people on the coast and you can find their works in stores and galleries and at the local markets that take place in the summer months.
From painting to jewellery, photography to carving, traditional weaving to modern clothes design, as well as poetry, book writing, singing and dance, the communities of Tofino & Ucluelet have an abundance of talent they would love to share with you.
